This is part of my ongoing series on the Mahabharat, an epic poem of ancient India. For links to all previous Mahabharat posts go here. Or you can simply click on the Mahabharat page link above.
I recorded this video just yesterday, for your entertainment...
Ok, people, so you haven't read any Mahabharat posts in months. You've had no Krishna or Arjuna or Draupadi or Duryodhana or (insert favourite Mahabharat character here) and you're feeling a little... Let down? Impatient? Suffering from Withdrawal?
Whatever you've been going through, I've been going through it worse. Believe me. And I've been thinking of how I can kick start us all back into Mahabharat mode and celebrate five years of Follow the Cowherd Boy at the same time. Then I suddenly thought - Quiz!
I've never done a quiz on this blog before. I've done polls and Q&As and vlogs but never a full-on quiz with prizes to be won. But if I'm going to do this then I'm going to do it properly.
So here's how it's going to work:
Next week on Friday March 9th 2012 I'm going to post 25 questions that pertain to my Mahabharat series and you (if you step up to the challenge) are going to answer them in the comments section beneath. Like I said in this latest vlog, it won't be easy.
1 POINT will be awarded per question and 5 EXTRA POINTS will go to those who post their answers on their own blog/facebook/twitter/social networking site. (Don't forget to tell me in the comments if you've done so).
Another 5 EXTRA POINTS will go to those who post on their blogs/facebook/twitter/social networking site before March 9th to let people know this quiz is happening. Again, don't forget to tell me in the comments section that you've done so.
You will have one week to post your answers. The deadline will be 12 midnight, Friday March 16th. That's the midnight of Friday, between Friday and Saturday, not Thursday and Friday.
Only people living in North America or Europe or Australia/New Zealand will be eligible to participate. I'm sorry! It's because I can't guarantee that a winner from another country will recieve their prize. For example, I've sent packages to India that got lost en route which was devastating for all parties concerned. If, however, you're not eligible but wish to enter simply for the fun of it then you are welcome to do so.
But you're wondering what the prizes are. And yes, there ARE prizes.
The winner of this Mahabharat quiz will recieve:
1. A signed copy of my first novel Follow the Cowherd Boy (limited first edition) with matching bookmarks. - For my readers.
2. An amazing illustrated children's book filled with stories from the epic. - For the kid in my readers.
3. A copy of The Bhagavad Gita according to Gandhi. The Bhagavad Gita is the most famous chapter of the Mahabharat and Gandhi was a huge fan. One of my favourite quotes from him is this: "When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and when I see not one ray of light on the horizon, I turn to the Bhagavad Gita, and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow." - For the lover of philosophy in my readers.
4. A brand new sari picked out by yours truly (so you know it's going to be gorgeous) along with material for a matching blouse. The sari will be accompanied by matching costume jewellery accessories and bindis. It's the whole enchilada. - For the frivolous lover of fashion in my readers.
The second and third runners up will each recieve:
A signed copy of my first novel Follow the Cowherd Boy (limited first edition) with matching bookmarks.
And by the way, if you think you can cheat by studying up on past Mahabharat posts using the handy little link at the top of this post... Well, tech-ni-cally it's cheating so tech-ni-cally you shouldn't. But tech-ni-cally you could argue that the Mahabharat is about knowing truth so only someone who checked their facts was being true to the story. And as we all know, Arjuna always took the initiative and did extra lessons on the side because he had excellence. So tech-ni-cally you could get away with it.
Either way, the challenge is on, people! Stay tuned for the questions next week.

I enjoy posting quizzes on my blog. I have one coming up but the prizes are no where near as good as yours.
This was a nice post. Great to see you vlog again.
Cheers and boogie boogie.
Have I told you how cute you are?? Haha, I'm having Jai withdrawals! Can't wait to see you soon :) Those are such fantastic prizes, can't wait
!
Happy Whisk, thanks! The quiz on your blog is fun, whatever the prize might be!
It's good to vlog again. Especially now that I've figured out how to edit videos, kinda.
Jai
Chrystal, no you hadn't told me how cute I am so thanks! Much appreciated!
Looking forward to seeing you too. It's been so long!
Jai
Good to see you vlogging again.
Sorry it has been so long we were past the withdrawals!
Al, haha, like when people get hungry but they go without food until they don't feel hungry anymore? Makes sense.
Jai
Hey Jai, my husband said you were cute, too. He came up behind me while I was watching your vlog. Those saris are gorgeous by the way.
And ooo quiz! And prizes!
I love your laugh, and the sari changes were so funny (but great too, because they're so pretty!)
Jaleh, tell your husband I said thank you! I remember that he wanted to buy you a sari a while back. Maybe you'll win this one!
Jai
Lydia, thanks! I had fun changing in and out of them.
Jai
Great to see you vlogging again and what an awesome quiz/contest. I will have to strive for *ahem* excellence, I'm afraid, but I will tweet about it. I'd love to see you this summer!
Victoria, excellence is always something to strive for! And that's 5 extra points for tweeting! I'll make a note of it.
Jai
I love watching your videos. :) Was definitely suffering from withdrawal for a while!
It sounds like an amazing challenge!
You are so cute! and this is so exciting! I have never had a blog quiz! I feel an urge to prepare for it..haha.
LOVE!
Golden Eagle, glad you like it!
Jai
tywo, you prepare however you wish! I won't say a word!
And the idea of a quiz is exciting. I loved the idea when I thought of it. The prizes are pretty cool too!
Jai
It's back! The Mahabhara's back! OK, I'll be honest with you. I've had a winning streak amongst bloggers for quite some time now. I would like to rise to the challenge but will check the questions first. Sorry, if I drop out. However, bearing in mind that I'm a Scorpio, I rarely do. So, to your other readers, brace yourselves. I want that sari! Preferably for the summer! :-)
By the way, loved the changes of outfit on your latest vlog. Rehearsing for the Mahabhara Oscars? ;-)
Have a nice Sunday.
Cuban, you made me laugh. I wasn't rehersing for the Mahabharat Oscars but it's a great idea!
And I have a feeling you won't let this challenge go. The sari is well worth it!
Jai
Hi Jai! Good to see that you are back for the new year. I have been planning to read your book for a long time and this quiz seems to be an excellent opportunity to get my hands on it. :)
Out of curiosity, since people will be posting their answers as comments, what's (apart from ethics) to stop them from using the previous answers for verifying their answers? Is it a First Come First Served principle, where the prizes go to the people to answer as soon as possible?
Girish, good question!
There is nothing to stop my readers from copying the answers of the posters before them or using them to verify their own answers. Nothing but my belief in their inherent goodness and fair play. I just don't think any of my readers would do that.
Also, the problem with copying another person's answers is that there's no way of knowing if they're actually correct. If they're wrong then it exposes the copier because they'll also be conspicuously wrong. So it's a bad gamble on top of being unethical. I wouldn't expect any of my readers to be that foolish.
*chuckle*
Good luck with the challenge. I'm glad you'll be taking part!
Jai
It's good to see the Mahabharat back. Oh a quiz! Exciting.
Lynda, thanks! I hope that whoever wins the prizes has fun with them!
Jai
Oh, yay! You're back! I haven't seen one of your videos for ages. It's good to see you again!
Talli, thanks! It's good to be back.
Jai
That's great! I have posted about the quiz on my blog at http://maytheforcebwithus.blogspot.com/2012/03/mahabharata-quiz.html so do add my 5 points! :)
Btw if multiple people answer all questions correctly (I know I WILL get all of them correct :P ), is the winner the first person to post all correct answers or will he/she be chosen randomly?
I'm just asking because if it is the first person rule, then I am planning to keep checking your blog the whole day for seeing whether the questions have been posted. Yes, I am that desperate to win! :P
what great timing for me to have found you :) i was trying to find a good youtube sanskrit pronunciation video to kickstart my month of mahahbharat! why month? every march i try to delve deeper. and this year i am determined to focus on sanskrit... and specifically, writing slokas.
i really enjoyed your videos... thanks and praise for your time & fantastic efforts!! i especially love your placards & your emphatic delivery! (haha, so much so that i did an impression of you, "mantra... NOT mAntra" for my husband.)
i even appreciated your rant! i will be watching for more...and for your quiz! i am also looking forward to catching up on your past blog posts! yea :D NAMASTE
Girish, you made me laugh out loud. I'm happy to see that you're so determined to win! Can't wait to see your answers.
If it turns out that there are many people who answer all the questions correctly then, depending on their number, I will either draw a name from a hat or I will make those people do a second mini quiz with harder questions! And I'll have them email me their answers instead of post them here or on their blogs! That way there's no chance of any confusion!
Jai
Celia, I'm so happy to hear that you enjoy my vlogs! And I'm glad to know that they're of use to you as well. For a while I was thinking of teaching everyone the roman transliteration way of understanding sanskrit pronunciation but that would have taken a couple of lessons on it's own and a lot more time! But that is the more precise way of understanding how to pronounce the words.
I'm impressed at your month of delving deeper. Enjoy catching up on my past posts! I hope it's as rewarding for you reading as it was for me writing!
Jai

g'luck to all... jai's prizes sound ab fab!

So there's too many Jai Joshi's on facebook, eh? Haha, good job I'm not on there! Shame, otherwise I'd friend you.
Jai

Laughingwolf,
There's a link on facebook back to here? Cool!
Jai
Terrific prizes, Jai. And a sari! Wonderful even though, tragically, I don't have the...um...build...to wear one. :D
Loved the fun you had with the sari changes. Entertainment, indeed.
My best to you.
Kevin, haha, you'd be suprised, saris have this magical ability to look good on anyone.
Jai
Don't tempt me, Jai. :D
And, they certainly look good on you.
Kevin, life is full of little temptations!
Jai
So glad you are back!
Srividya, thanks! It feels good to be back.
Jai
