I had a post ready for you today but it was a bit risque and I didn't want to burn any sensitive ears. So I'm leaving that one for the fairies to giggle over while I tell you all about my new obssession.
GAME OF THRONES.
Those of you with HBO will probably know about the new series that started last year starring Sean Bean. It's based on George R. R. Martin's fantasy book series 'A Song of Ice and Fire' (ASoIaF for short) and is set in a type of medieval world with politics and complex characters and chivalry and betrayal.
Well, I watched the series when it came out and was instantly hooked by... Well, I won't lie. It was the character Khal Drogo (played by Jason Momoa) who hooked me. I just couldn't look away. But as the season unravelled I became more and more fascinated by the other characters - Jon Snow and Danaerys and Ned Stark and Tyrion. When the series ended on a major cliffhanger I was a nervous wreck!
So off I went to my friendly airport bookstore (yes, airport) and I bought the first book in the ASoIaF series. I read it and saw how faithful the series had been to the book except for a few minor details. I was very impressed. George Martin manages to write a fantasy epic in a way that totally draws you in because it's so realistic. He plays on the unrealiable narrator in every scene until the reader is guessing at the most basic things because you can't trust that what you hear from a character is the truth. Just like in real life. People see what they want to see and believe what they want to believe. The rest is up to you.
And while I began this obssession with Khal Drogo I am totally devoted to Jon Snow.
I've read all books in the series and am dying for the next book to come out! The problem is that George Martin is terrible at producing books on time. The last one (A Dance with Dragons) came out after a five year wait and I think the one before that (A Feast for Crows) was a six year wait. So all fans of this series are bracing themselves for a long haul until The Winds of Winter is finally in our hands.
Is anyone here a fan of this series? Do you have any complaints about it?
I do, (although that doesn't stop me from wanting to read the next book). I think that George Martin made some major tactical errors in his planning. He underestimated the time it would take to fully explore his characters complexities. He also screwed up in not fully considering the implications of his characters' ages when he first began ASoIaF.
I still love the books but reading them has also been a cautionary tale in how to plan a major project. Interesting, that.
That said, the HBO adaptation is showing the second season starting April 1st. Can't wait! My darling Jon Snow!

No Jai :( It will be a year before anything comes on our tv, but then it has been a while since I turned it on so I really don't know.
Oceangirl,
I don't normally watch TV except for the news and some documentaries and a few select shows. Game of Thrones is one of my select shows. Shame you can't see it, it's a fascinating story!

I read the first book in the ASolaF series (good acronym, BTW) but I didn't really like it. I did enjoy the writing style, though, and the plot was interesting.
I wish I had HBO so I can watch. I'v bought the first three novels but haven't had time to read them yet. Sounds exciting.
......dhole
I haven't read the series, but I've heard such good things about them. I'd like to get obsessed, too. But I might wait to read them until they're all out, if possible. I'm so impatient.
Golden Eagle, that's a shame, what didn't you like about it? You said you enjoyed the writing style and the plot was good so what didn't work for you?
Jai
Donna, I was going to buy the DVD until I realised that it didn't come out until March. I'm biting my nails until the day!

Carol, I have to say, it's been quite a while since I was this obssessed with a book series. The last was Harry Potter and since there it's been a long dry stretch of meaningless time. Thank goodness I started reading ASoIaF! Gives me something to look forward to.

I've been meaning to pick up the series, but I'm afraid I would neglect real life once I got into them. It will have to wait until I get all the kids in school. Thanks for the rec! <3

Jackee, I can sympathise! By all means, wait until all the kids are at school.
By the way, don't watch the series when the kids are around. It's not for them!

Oh Jai, I have missed you sooo much! I lost the blogs I was following! I'm following you again, and can't wait to read more posts!
I have never heard of the show! I need to start watching something other than "the big bang theory"!
Have a lovely night!
LOVE!
Tywo, so good to see you! I've missed you too.
Yes, please do watch something other than the big bang theory although the big bang theory is good stuff too. Game of Thrones is a great choice! You'll love the characters and be horrified by the truly messed up intrigue that goes one. It's fascinating!

i've read martin in the past and was impressed... this series goes on my tbr list, since i gave up tv years ago...
to watch dvds, i plug them into my computers....
Have fun with it, Laughingwolf. I was hooked within the first couple of chapters because his characters are so cool and interesting.
DVDs are good too. And the best thing about them is that you don't have to wait for next weeks episode!

I was, only vaguely, aware of George Martin - the fault, mine - before HBO created Season 1 of A Song of Ice and Fire.
I was stunned, by the story, the characters and the casting!
Once the season was over, I bought the set of the currently-published books. However, I've only read the first one. Like you, I'm impressed at how faithful the TV series was to the book.
My preference is now to wait till I see Season 2 before I read the book. Just a personal quirk, for this particular set of stories. (With Harry Potter, it was the opposite. I needed to read the books before I'd see the films.)
I agree with you re. Khal Drogo - though I believe he chose better than he knew in choosing his wife.
I'm looking forward to Season 2.
Kevin, I totally understand your quirk of wanting to watch each series before reading each book. The tv series is that good. I would have done the same if I'd had more patience but I couldn't! I had to know what happened next and I had to know yesterday. So I went ahead and read all five books and now I'm in agony waiting for the sixth. But the good news is that season 2 of Game of Thrones comes out April 1st! Not long now!
