How to Pronounce the Names Part IV

This is part of my ongoing series on the Mahabharat, an epic poem of ancient India. For links to all previous Mahabharat posts go here. Or you can simply click on the Mahabharat page link above.

This is the next part of my How to Pronounce the Names vlog series. Click to view the first, second, and third parts.

And here is this weeks installmment:

Towards the end there the video goes a little out of sync. I don't know why and couldn't figure out a way to correct it but since this was my fourth attempt to get this video done, I let it go. Life is too short, people.

This is the link to the post I'm reading from.

And this is the link to the series before Bhishma's entitled Shantanu - the Ancestor where you'll learn about how Bhishma came to take his vows and why they were so important.

Jaleh, thanks! I'm still getting over a cold so my voice sounds a bit odd to me. But the cough has almost all gone.

Happy belated birthday Jai!

That is one very very feisty woman in your story. If she doesn't get him in this life she'll get him next time round. ouch!

Talli, haha! The good news is it's not the magical duvet. I put that one away since it's summer now. This duvet is new and doesn't make me all sleepy and delirious.

Lydia, do you think anyone would pay? Hahaha!

Elizabeth, Amba was no woman to mess with, that's for sure. Bhishma made a serious mistake regarding her.

Lola, thank you! You're so kind to say so and you cheered me up because I was feeling so haggard what with recovering from a horrible cold.

Happy birthday! Or should I say "birthweek"! :-)

Great post as usual.

By the way, agree with you on Weiner's weiner. It's just that on any other day as an isolated case I wouldn't even have taken umbrage but when it comes on the back of much c**p, well, you know, put it away, mate!:-)

Greetings from London.

Whats up? Your posts are not that regular now. Hope things are okay with you. Work must be keeping you away from blogger.

Rachna, I've been down with a horrible cold recently and that's made me feel like I'm slogging my way through a pool of mud. It's been a hard recovery. Thanks for thinking of me.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Clarissa, I haven't studied latin the way I've studied Sanskrit but I'd like to. They are closely related languages.

A belated Happy Birthweek to you, Jai! I hope you enjoyed it. Though I remind myself that every birthday I am getting one year older, I also remind myself I am still living in this beautiful life. What a joy that is!

And a joy to watch you, always, tell your Mahabharat stories, too!

I'm glad you had a good birthday week!

I don't think I would have pronounced even one of those words correctly. I was surprised by how far off my pronunciations were.

Jai Joshi said...

tywo, if any of my comments help you then I'll be happy.

And thanks for the compliment. I admire teachers a great deal because of the patience and hard work they required for the job.

Nevine, I've starting to think about how every birthday means being another year older too, but I've decided to make every one such an experience that the thought of being older doesn't matter!

Living is such a blessing, we should appreciated every moment.

Susan, I'm glad these pronunciation vlogs are helping then. I did suspect that quite a few of my readers here might get into the wrong way of saying the names and hence these vlogs. I'm happy to know they're working for you.

Happy Belated Birthday! :)

Great vlog--thank you for the explanation of the pronunciation.

Tara said...

I love your vlogs. And I'm anal about knowing how names are pronounced in the books I read. If I can't figure it out, I have to stop and google the pronunciation!

Tara said...

Happy belated bday (week), btw!

Jai Joshi said...

Golden Eagle, it's my pleasure!

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Tara, I'm the same. I have to know the correct pronunciation.

And thanks for the birthday wishes!

I think the pronunciation of Devvrath /Devvrat does not match with the way you spell it- "Devrath".
