How to Pronounce the Names Part III

This is part of my ongoing series on the Mahabharat, an epic poem of ancient India. For links to all previous Mahabharat posts go here. Or you can simply click on the Mahabharat page link above.

The last couple of weeks we've been learning how to pronounce the names in the Mahabharat. Click for the first and second parts.

And now for today's vlog:

I'm loving these pronunciation vlogs. You got me with Hastinapur. Your 'h' sounds much raspier and slightly more guttural than the English 'h'. In fact, I would dare to say that it sounds like the 'j' from southern Spain, especially Andalucia.

Many thanks.

Greetings from London.

These vlogs are interesting, Jai.

How are things with you? Hope the work is going good?

Jai Joshi said...

Cuban, aspiration is very important when it comes to the 'h' in Sanskrit. It must be precise.

Rachna, things are going crazy. I'm training someone to take over my position at work (so I can return to more reasonable hours) and I've got a horrible cold on top of it all. But it could be worse. I'm just glad I recorded these vlogs two weeks ago and don't have to worry about getting one ready right now. I feel haggard.

You have such a beautiful voice. It makes learning these names so much more fun!

Hope your cold goes away, fast.

OMG! A hundred sons! The poor girl's going to be wore out! :) And yes, I got to read the names you held up Jai.

Sending you blessings for a speedy healing.

Yay! Another vlog! I love learning how to say the names, too.

Feel better!

Jai Joshi said...

Laughingwolf, IF I ever have children, I'll make them read to me. tee hee!

Hi Betty, nice to meet you! I've seen your comments on Nevine's blog and am flattered that you popped over here to visit. Welcome!

Jai Joshi said...

Lydia, thanks! My voice right now is hoarse and croaky. Not at all beautiful. I'm hoping I get well soon but with the way this phlegm seems to be settling in, I just don't know.

Elizabeth, yes, 100 sons. And if you read the rest of the series you'll find out how they were all born too. It's really quite stunning.

Jai Joshi said...

Talli, thanks! I'm getting some extra rest in my work day now so it does help.

This is such a good idea for a blog series - especially with video lessons!

laughingwolf said...

while you correct every word, jai? :O lol

Jai Joshi said...

Katie, thanks! It's been stewing in my mind for ages now so I'm finally doing it.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Laughingwolf, it's the only way they'll learn. And if I'm too tired to correct them I'll tell them it's cool to make up words. Shakespeare did it.

I love these so much, I'll have to go back and check out the other one. I just realized that I missed one! You're voice is perfect, you really need to record an audio version of your book, it would sell like hotcakes :)

I'm having a book signing at the end of the month or the first week of July, would you be able to come? It would be in Dallas, but I'd love to come up to Ardmore and do a signing as well!

Chrystal Anne said...

By-the-way, I can't wait to read your next book. I'm super excited!

Jai Joshi said...

Chrystal, I will do whatever I can to make it there! Count on me.

Have you let the local media know? I can send you a list of my contacts although most of them are based around the Lewisville area. But even then it's still good to have the publicity in as many places as you can. And don't forget to send a press release to the local pbs radio station. They'll read it out on their local events bulletin for you.

I'm so excited for you! This is going to be great!

Jai

Chrystal Anne said...

I haven't, but that is a wonderful idea! Please do send me the contacts, I need all the help I can get. Thanks so much Jai, I can't stress enough how thankful I am :) I'll be sure to call them and find out what I can do at pbs!

perfect answer! ;)

I love the Gandhari series from your Mahabharat posts. Your reading makes Gandhari seem that much more wise, but grounded!

Jai Joshi said...

Hema, thanks. Gandhari was immensely wise. If only Dritrashtra had listened to her.
