How to Pronounce the Names

This is part of my ongoing series on the Mahabharat, an epic poem of ancient India. For links to all previous Mahabharat posts go here. Or you can simply click on the Mahabharat page link above.

I know I know, I've been awol for far too long. I haven't visited your blogs in ages. I'm a crappy blog friend and I don't deserve you. I know.

Please give me time. I'm trying...

In the meantime, if you're not too irritated with me then have a watch.

No worries. Blogging should be a chore. You get to it when you get to it. Most of all, I think anyway, blogging should be fun. Do it when you want, don't when you don't.

Simple. Easy. No worries.

Completely understandable. Just been through a very patchy blogging period myself.

Jai,
I find it interesting that when you speak the word Sanskrit you pronounce the a as u like in sun. But when you pronounce the word Vedas you pronounce the a as a.

Which when you put that together with your admonition to pronounce sanskrit, as it is written, is a little confusing.

Happy Whisk, thanks for being so understanding. I've always been very disciplined with my blogging but the last few months have defeated me.

Blogger Formerly Known As,

thanks! I know just what you mean.

Elizabeth, thanks for pointing that out.

Sanskrit has long and short vowels that are not written well in English. This is why I'm pronouncing them for you.

In Sanskrit you would have a short 'a' and a long 'a', a short 'o' and long 'o', a short 'u' and a long 'u', a short 'i' and a long 'i' and they all have their own symbols which are quick and easy to identify.

But if you were to write aa and uu and ii in English it would blur the eyes and confuse the mind. English is the confusing language really because the vowels are not as clear nor are the pronunciations as precise.

The Vedaas have to be pronounced exaactly as they're writtan but Inglish isn't writtan at all the way it's suppoosed to be spoken.

See what I mean?

Very interesting video, Jai! And don't worry about being absent. We're still here whenever you decide to show up. :)

Wow. I find it fascinating that Sanskrit is so precise, when other languages are all over the place when it comes to pronunciation. And I loved learning more about the Mahabharat. :)

I know, you've been too busy being a vlogger to be a blogger. I get it.

Jai Joshi said...

Emily, my real worry is that I get lonely without you guys. It's boring getting through the day without my blogger buddies.

Golden Eagle, It is amazing that Sanskrit is so precise. That's what so many liguists all over the world have discovered and why Sanskrit is so respected as a language.

Karen, I don't even get time to vlog. I have to steal ten minutes out of my work time, or ten minutes from my time doing laundry. It's the only thing I can manage right now because I don't have any time to write. My brain is jumping all over the place because I can't write or blog and it's driving me crazy.

Wow...I never knew that Bharat is another word for India. I know of Hindustan and that is what I hear Indians saying most of the time.

Thanks for that little nugget of knowledge! :)

Jai: You really are too hard on yourself. I visit my followers when I can but rarely leave a comment. You always respond, so we know you've read whatever we have to say. My wish for you is more "me" time so you can do whatever you want.

We go through tough phases in our life. It's not the end of the world if we don't do Blogger. You did come by a few posts ago and leave a comment.

I hope you've been able to write. You're a Very Good writer, Jai. So just don't worry when you have down times. That means Up times will follow, even if it takes a while!

still looking for the watch... is it on your left or right wrist? :O lol

Camille, Hindustan as a name has only been around for a few hundred years. That's modern for Indians who have history going back more than five thousand years. Hindustan is considered more of a colloquialism than a real name while the nation anthem sings of Bharat and the national deity is Bharat Mata = Mother India.

Dorothy, if I ever get any 'me' time I'll write. Ah, the bliss of writing... I feel like I'm half missing when I can't write.

Ann, thanks so much for the encouragement and for your belief in my abilities. It really means a lot.

Laughingwolf, I watched the entire video to see where I'd talked about watches. I was so confused. Then I caught my last written line and the penny dropped! haha, I don't wear watches.

Amen Jai! English is so very confusing and the amount of rules and exceptions are beyond silly.

Thanks for taking the time to give us all these interesting facts and info, especially since I know your time is so precious with your job!

Don't worry about being a 'lousy' blog buddy because you're nothing of the sort. <3

Take care,
Chrystal

Can't stay irritated with you for long, Jai. I did wonder what happened to my good friend Jai, but then I realized that with a new job and a new place, blogging has taken a back seat.

Jai Joshi said...

Chrystal, I've been feeling guilty for weeks but thanks for helping me feel better. You always do.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Rachna, when you work fourteen hour shifts with no breaks or set lunch hour (I eat if I can grab five minutes) there's not much time to do anything but eat and sleep when I go home. So I've fallen behind on my blogging big time. I'm managing to record these vlogs in the time I could be eating my lunch.

I'm behind on my reading, trying to get caught up today. I like your reason for not doing much on Blogger. You've been busy; I just haven't felt like being on much this past couple weeks.

Jai Joshi said...

Eric, I wish it would flow more than ebb (but not like a tsunami or anything - just a nice gentle flow).

Jaleh, I think everyone's entitled to those feelings every once in a while. I'm happy to see you here now.
