This is part of my ongoing series on the Mahabharat, an epic poem of ancient India. For links to all previous Mahabharat posts go here. Or you can simply click on the Mahabharat page link above.
In the last Mahabharat post we saw that Krishna had a city built named Dwarka (also known as Dwarika), to serve as the new location of his people's royal court. The city was designed and built by the demi-god Vishwakarma, by raising an island from beneath the sea. He created such a wonder of beauty that the city has lived forever in the minds of Hindus as the golden city of God.
The Mahabharat states that after Krishna left the mortal realm, Dwarka sank beneath the sea once more.
For many years the existence of Dwarka was considered by archaeologists to be simply a myth. Until this:
Work goes on in the exploration of the undersea find. Every day new secrets are being revealed.

Hi Jai..its wonderful to see the Mahabharat post. Dwarka was a great city.
Ooh.. I love stories like this.. it really makes you stop and think, doesn't it?
What an amazing find! Hopefully it's made into a TV special so we can see more.
And how many times have we heard it said that myth is based in fact? Let's rest that case... don't you think?

Jai
Rachna, the more we learn the more it fascinates me.

WritingNut, exactly. Revelations like these make us rethink our whole understanding of the world.

Diane, a documentary maker and writer called Graham Hancock has done several films where he featured Dwarka and the undersea structures off the coast of India. Others have done films too. I'm always excited to find more because I love to learn about this stuff.
Jai
Nevine, I think we can easily rest that case here and now!
Jai
Chrystal, I know! Isn't it fascinating?
Jai
Laughingwolf, there are many historians who believe that the Atlantis story was inspired by Dwarka and that the story came to Europe via the trade routes, just as certain mathematical principles entered into Europe by way of the trade routes.
Jai
How fascinating, Jai!! It reminded me of the underwater pyraminds of Japan and the submerged (in water) temples of Mahabalipuram. Thanks for sharing this. I can't wait to dig deeper into this one!
Hema, I know! There's been work going on at Dwarka for over ten years now since the initial find.
Jai
Amazing! I just can't get enough of your stories. Many thanks.
Greetings from London.
