The Box

I want to tell you about the things I've been watching on TV lately. Now, other than last week and the occasional comment about 'Dexter', I don't often talk about what I watch on TV. To be honest, I don't watch much. My list consists of the news, Dexter, South Park. Book TV if I'm in the mood to have my brain numbed with boredom. That's about the sum of my TV watching.

Recently, however, I've been concentrating on ways to be more disciplined about having non-writing time (because of my two worlds philosophy). As a result I've found myself in front of the box for several more hours a week looking for something interesting to engage my mind.

That's how I discovered my new obssession. It's on PBS Masterpiece Mystery and it's called 'Sherlock.' Have you been watching it? Have you? If you haven't then why not? What's wrong with you? 'Sherlock' (made by the BBC of course) is the new take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Sherlock Holmes series. Everything about this series is FANTASTIC. The razor sharp script. The London backdrop. The chemistry between Holmes and Watson. The irony. The brilliant villain. The editing. The design. The way Sherlock Holmes wears three nicotine patches at a time because they "help" him think. I could go on and on. Love it!

That's why I've been incredibly upset to find that there were only three episodes broadcast. Why? It's like dangling chocolate cake in front of a child and then telling the child she can't have any. It's cruel. It's wrong.

PBS, you meanie, put 'Sherlock' back on IMMEDIATELY! And if there aren't any other episodes then rerun the first three. I need to watch them again!

On the other hand, another series I've been watching is PBS's 'Nature'. Dude, it's just too good. If you don't watch this series then you've got to take a look. Did you know that they've been deciphering the language crows speak to each other? Did you know that crows actually have two languages? Did you know that crows learn things from their parents (who mate for life) like how to recognise faces and react towards them and that crows are one of the most intelligent species on the planet? I didn't until after I watched an episode of 'Nature'. Check this series out!

Then last Friday I watched something on NBC that blew me away. It was a documentary by Prince Charles called 'Harmony'. Did you see it? It was about how we are all interconnected on this planet and how we all can find ways to be more in harmony with nature and each other and ourselves. It was AMAZING. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a die hard fan of Prince Charles (for his wisdom and inspiring commitment to environmental causes). Really, this documentary was beautiful. And the timing was beautiful too!

If you've been reading my Mahabharat series the last few weeks, you'll know that one of the themes of my Never Fear story is about nature and the environment and our place in it. On Friday I posted the third (and last) part, and then, just a couple of hours later, I saw 'Harmony'. It was like I was in 'Harmony' with Prince Charles! He said everything I'd been writing about only with the added synergy of people all over the world who were saying the same thing. We are ALL connected.

My heart was full of love after I watched that program. If you haven't seen 'Harmony' then you must. I taped it because I knew it was going to be special. I wish I could invite you all to my house so we could eat yummy organic food as we watch it together.

That's the sum of my recent TV watching. To be honest with you, knowing that programming like this is available for people is heartwarming for me. Usually, I turn on the TV and get depressed by the lack of quality shows. And I turn it off again. Now I know that there is quality TV avaliable that contains humanity and wit and hope and education. Programming that enriches our lives. Since that's the kind of story I like to write, I love that it's also the kind of story I get to watch.

Check out this Harmony trailer:

I think Prince Charles is really brave for doing this. I've always appreciated that footnote in your writing, that connection between the people and the planet.
Have a great week and weekend, Jai.

How did I miss that show on NBC. I love Prince Charles and the way he feels about the environment. But I don't think I watch anything else on NBC so probably didn't see an advert for it. Boo. Maybe I can check it out online.

PBS is another station that I too often skip over because I don't know what's going on there, but I always love the BBC stuff. It's too bad that they only do really short runs of these great programs.

I hope you don't run screaming from me when I tell you my new favorite obsession is The Walking Dead on AMC. Okay, true, it has zombies, yes. But really it's about the relationships between people who are trying to survive an apocalypse. Very interesting! But they only did six episodes to start. Season 2 has been picked up though so there will be more, but there are only two episodes left this season.

Anyway, if I had a gazillion dollars, I'd be on a super environmental committee with Prince Charles and Al Gore, and we'd change the world. But I'll have to settle for doing the little that I can. (which reminds me, I need to take the recycling to the center, ASAP.)

Happy Thanksgiving.

Lydia, Prince Charles has been my hero for a long time. He's done so many good things and he never gives up even when the task is so hard.

Have a great week too!

Melissa, you should definitely check out the great things on PBS. I've been on that channel more than others in recent weeks and love it.

I haven't heard of The Walking Dead. AMC does do some great shows, I used to watch 'Hustle' on there a few years ago. Loved that show!

I also wish I had a gazillion dollars to try to do something huge to change the world. Instead I'm going to try in my own way to make a difference. I'll walk to the grocery store instead of taking the car, I'll use energy saving lightbulbs, I'll unplug my appliances when I'm not using them, I'll recycle, I eat more organic. There are so many things we can do which add up.

The trailer was wonderful. I'll be on the look out for the documentary. I love Sherlock Holmes and made better with Robert Downey, Jr !:) But we don't have the series on tv. Reruns are "good". My brain has an overdosed of "Next Top Models" (America, Britain, Australia, Canada) and "How I met your mother". Barney Stinson flood our lives. Bad.

Hello Jai, thank you for your welcoming cheer. It was really nice to "see" you again.

Harmony definitely says a lot and tells it as it should be. We all have to work and be apart of it. I didn't know about this program, thanks for sharing.

Ocean Girl, it's so nice to see you back blogging! I was delighted to read your latest post.

The new 'Sherlock' series is excellent! I highly recommend it. Haven't seen the Robert Downey Jr. film yet.

Mason, this program really did give me such a sense of peace (in the philosophy of harmony and connection) but also motivation in that there is something we can all do to make a difference.

Jai, I appreciate that I always learn so much from your posts. Harmony sounds absolutely wonderful and now I must be on the look out for it.

Somehow I can't see you watching South Park, though I'm not sure why. I've only caught snippets here and there as my sons watch, and, well, I guess the kindest word I have for the show is appalling, but having only seen those bit parts, that may be an unfair critique.

I hardly ever watch TV, mainly because I don't have the patience to sit for so long. Even when I do watch I have pen or pencil and paper - I'm either writing or doodling. What do they call that? ADHD? Quite possible. :)
When I do watch TV it's SEC football, or "ghost" shows, or HGTV. Sometimes I'll have the Food Network on as I'm cooking, but that's about it. I'm probably missing out on a lot of great enetertainment, but I'm satisfied with my books and notebooks.

Thanks for yet another knowledgable post!

I hardly see much T.V. The documentary harmony sounds wonderful, will try and find out how I can watch it. Thanks for alerting me to it, Jai.

I haven't heard of Harmony! Strange, since I live in London. Then again, Prince Charles isn't exactly well liked in this neck of the woods!

Jai Joshi said...

Deanna, I watch South Park because not only is it hilariously funny, it's also clever social commentary. South Park manages to expose some of the deepest and truest realities in our society and it does it in a sharp ironic way. Yes, they go way too far sometimes but they always have something intelligent to say. You just have to think deeper about it to make the connection.

I won't say it's all good clean fun though. Some of it makes even a fan like me blanch. I don't watch those episodes.

Rachna, you've got to check out 'Harmony'. It's inspiring.

Talli, for a long time I didn't like Prince Charles either because all I ever heard about him was that he cheated on his wife.

But then I heard about his causes and the serious efforts he's made to do so many good things and I looked deeper into it and I realised how unfair it was that on the basis of one mistake so many of his own people wrote him off. It's not right. He's a good person and a good parent and the only mistake he ever made in his life was that he married someone he didn't love.

Britain needs to let it go. After all, there are many countries with leaders and famous figures who don't try nearly as hard as he does to improve their society. It amazes me that no one appreciates that about him.

I've heard so many good things about Sherlock. I've not had a chance to see it yet but it's definitely on my list. Gotta love the BBC ;)

Lynda, the BBC definitely know what they're doing. Let me know what you think of Sherlock when you do get a chance to see it.

hey cool blog :)
I don't watch much TV either but by the looks of it, it seems there's much going on there. I had no idea baout the crows - very interesting!

Jai Joshi said...

Hi Ivana, nice to meet you!

The reason I've been spending more time on the PBS channel recently is because I went there to watch one cool thing and realised that everything on that night was good. I ended up watching all of it. Have fun discovering the coolness!

I don't watch much TV, but I do catch South Park sometimes (love the societal commentary) and I've always wanted to watch Dexter! True Blood is my biggest TV obsession. I'll have to check out Harmony - I always cry when I watch those environmental shows though, because I feel so helpless and hopeful all at the same time.

Jai Joshi said...

Alexia, that was what was so great about Harmony. It didn't make the situation seem hopeless at all. In fact, it was talking about all the things that are already being done and should be done more by us all to make a serious difference. That's why I was so radiant with love after watching it because it showed so many people all over the world who are doing such great things.

Jai, I hadn't heard of the Harmony showing, but I'll look for a repeat broadcast. But I love the new Holmes—very good writing, characterizations and editing. Though they could give Watson a little more coffee to drink, since he seems to not have a lot of pluck.

Jai Joshi said...

Tom, I think Watson is perfect. He was always supposed to be stumbling along beside Holmes, constantly bewildered at the events and yet solid at Holmes back. Almost like the reader themselves. I thought in this series they managed to strike just the right note. Love it!
