Warning

Hey everyone. I just wanted to take a moment to warn you about this.

As other blogspot users you may have received something from Google Adwords in May that was a promotional offer to induce people to run adwords campaigns for their blogs. They offered $100 free as a startup for your own personal campaign. They said that it was no obligation and that you could cancel at any time if you decided you didn't like it.

Like a schmuck I signed up. The website was ridiculously cumbersome and I saw no real effectiveness from the 'campaign' as they called it. Within a week I figured out it was a scam and decided to cancel the account. The website was such a maze and so difficult to navigate that it took me over an hour to try to find out how to cancel my account. On top of that there was no genuine way to get help. Any time I clicked on their 'help' button it took me right back to all the other pages I'd just dragged myself through so I had to go through the whole process again. They provided no email address and no phone number to get direct help. From the way the thing was set up, I'd had to give my credit card details to set up the account to begin with and I couldn't figure out a way to take that off. It wouldn't let me go beyond that point. Finally, after over an hour of stress, I canceled the account and was glad to be out of the scam.

I heard nothing from them for two months, all the time that I was traveling out of the country.

Then, out of the blue and one day before I was to fly back to the states, I got an email from Google Adwords that said the card on my Adwords account had been declined when they'd tried to charge me $91 for my July bill.

WHAT!

What Adwords account? What July charge? What $91?

I immediately went to the Adwords website to find some way to contact them, since they said I couldn't reply to the email they'd sent me.

I couldn't find any way to contact them. What a surprise. It took me over half an hour of find some way around their 'help' button and locate an extremely obscure way of contacting them. I sent an email stating that I'd canceled my account in May and that I didn't owe them anything and for them to refund me the money they'd charged.

They emailed back saying that the charges were legitimate (in June they charged me over $50) and that I had to pay the $91 bill for July.

I emailed back explaining that I didn't owe them anything, especially not for any 'campaign'. I'd canceled everything within a week of setting it up and if their faulty website was trying to get money out of me then they had to refund it.

They refused. Repeatedly. I went to my bank as soon as I got back to the states and found out about all these overdraft fees caused by these fraudulent charges from Google Adwords. Not only was I out of pocket by the significant amount Adwords taken from me in June, I was stuck with all these overdraft fees. I explained the situation to my bank and put in a claim for fraudulent charges.

Now I'm waiting to get my money back although I recieved another email from them just now saying that they weren't going to give me my money back and instead expected me to pay them for my 'campaign' in July! It's such a massive headache to know that I've been cheated by them for the past two months and I didn't have any clue about it.

Whatever you do, don't get involved with Adwords. It's a major scam. If you're already involved with Adwords then I suggest you keep a sharp eye on the charges they're making on your account. And if you're in the same position I'm in and can't find a way to contact them for help then this is the email address I found after ages of searching for it:
adwords-support@google.com
I hope it proves to be more help for you than it has for me and if not then at least you won't have to spend forever looking for a contact method.

Oh my... and welcome back! I thought adwords was PAYING bloggers $100 for the privilege? I wish I could help you, but my own experience finding a real live person at google has been, well, impossible. Who IS that man behind the curtain? Hugs for your frustrations. Peace...

Jai, and everyone else, the first thing to do when you realise you have been taken by a scam involving your credit or debit card is contact the issuer and ask for the card to be shut down and a new number issued. That way the thieves can't take anymore money from you.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Hope you will get the feds involved by letting them know about this scam.

Phil, I can't believe I got taken in either. I guess because it was google I had more trust than I normally would with any other offer. But it looks like even google is running these scams. Or at least the adwords department is.

Hema, yeah but I'm two months too late. I never imagined they would do this.

Lydia, I just wanted to make sure that everyone else was aware of how adwords was scamming people. I feel like such a fool for having trusted them.

Linda, isn't it impossible to get any actual human help from google? It's horrible. But I never thought they'd go round stealing my money! I guess their power has gone to their heads and they think they can get away with anything.

Jaleh, I'm sticking to my guns and hopefully will get my money back. I really can't afford to let people steal the little I have.

Yikes! It is no fun going through all this. Unfortunately, I've been scammed before as well. Let me tell you what works every single time (sadly, I've had to use this threat numerous times on people--and no, not because I'm gullible ;) They weren't all internet scams. Some of them were problems with my insurance): threaten to go to a national news station. The news station WILL pick it up and the scammers know this.

That's horrible! I'm so sorry, Jai. I'll keep an eye out for it and spread the word. They should NOT get to get away with such thing. Best of luck getting your money back!

Thanks for the advice. I have been tempted to run ads on my blog but ever since I heard the (true) story of a neo-Nazi blog that kept being swamped with requests for memorabilia of the civil rights era, I realised it wasn't worth it. The fascists kept uploading posts about Jews, blacks and other hate figures and since Google ads link automatically to whatever article's been posted, the majority of the adverts were for books, photographs and other bits and bobs related to the Holocaust, slavery and civil rights movement. Maybe karma does work after all!

Keep safe.

Greetings from London.

Jai, I want to say welcome back, but I feel like saying that is sort of "rubbing it in". Although I do welcome you back!

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this horrific headache, and any time money is involved it's a headache (in my opinion). This on top of your AC being broken, your flat tire, etc, etc. I'm surprised you're not in the hospital with a nervous breakdown - I would be!

All the best to you, and get yourself some much needed and well deserved rest!

Jai Joshi said...

Susan, it's a massive headache. Adwords are just not being reasonable.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Barb, I'm thinking of switching. I've never considered going to wordpress before but with all this commotion caused by google's behaviour, I might have to just to get away from them.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Vrunda, I'll never make this mistake again. Adwords are evil.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Emily, I told adwords that if they didn't refund me I'd go to the media but they still refused to refund my money. I just can't believe these people.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Jackee, definitely spread the word. I can't believe Google is behaving like this. I never would have expected it from them. Did you also hear about how Google are doing a deal with verizon to get rid of net neutrality? They're stooping to that low too.

Jai

Jai Joshi said...

Cuban, yes I've been thinking about getting rid of the ads on my blog too although I haven't had anything as horrific as what you describe. To be honest, I haven't seen any profit from the ads either so they just up space and look tacky.

The money issue that adwords is charging me for is what they call a 'campaign' to run ads of my blog on other websites. I didn't see any effectiveness from the 'campaign' for the week I actually agreed to it. After that I cancelled it and never wanted to have anything to do with it again. But they're charging me for all this time.

Jai Joshi said...

tywo, I'm glad I was able to warn you.

Jai Joshi said...

Deanna, you see how I've been bombarded the moment I got back to the country. I might just go away and never come back what will all these issues that are not my fault and have no business bothering me.

I'm trying to get rest but I don't see how that's going to happen.
